“And when you draw close to God, God will draw close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and let your hearts be filled with God alone to make them pure and true to him.” James 4:8
Spending time daily seeking God, reading the Bible, confessing, worshipping, praying and just spending time in His presence is so powerful. It’s transformational. For me, it has become one of my favorite parts of the day. Not rushing, but savoring the time alone with my Savior. I heard a phrase recently that made me sad; it was “drive-by devotions”, which I guess is better than no devotion time at all, but certainly isn’t the best plan.
Knowing that Jesus set the example, and if it was a priority to Him when He walked through life on this earth, it surely should be for us too.
“Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” Luke 11:1
“Jesus would withdraw to deserted places and pray.” Luke 5:16
Just having knowledge about the Lord and His Word isn’t enough, if we are aiming to live a faithful life. Applying the Word we are reading and hearing must be applied to be real knowledge and not just head knowledge. To apply it to our lives, we need the empowerment of the Holy Spirit and not just our own efforts trying to strive for it. But, what sweet transformation happens when we submit to His Word and His purpose and plan for our lives. It makes all the difference in living freely and victoriously, .and it can start in your own home every single morning and then carry you through your day, as you stay in tune with the Lord throughout the day. If we start the day with other priorities, our time with Him often slips away and we don’t make Him a priority as the day goes on.
I know that this priority in my life has changed everything. I am able to face the day with a great perspective (God’s) and start off right, with empowerment, love for others and joy. If you aren’t currently in this practice, give it a try and see for yourself.
Prayer: Thank You Lord for showing us by your example how you made time with Your Father a priority. I pray that it will become my priority and that it won’t be a duty, but a joy to come and spend time with You. Thank You for desiring a relationship with me, and for making the ultimate sacrifice because you loved all of humanity so much, even though we were unworthy. Strengthen me through the power of Your Word and prayer. In the powerful name of Jesus we pray, amen.
