The Forgotten "10"

Numbers 13:1–3 (ESV)

1 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the people of Israel. From each tribe of their fathers you shall send a man, every one a chief among them.” 3 So Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran, according to the command of the Lord, all of them men who were heads of the people of Israel.

Numbers 13:25–28 (ESV)

25 At the end of forty days they returned from spying out the land. 26 And they came to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation of the people of Israel in the wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh. They brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. 27 And they told him, “We came to the land to which you sent us. It flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. 28 However, the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. And besides, we saw the descendants of Anak there.

Did you ever wonder what it would be like to be famous? To have your name go down in the annals of time as somebody…somebody who people would remember…somebody who others would name their children after…somebody who made a difference?

Well this Bible story in our text is a story of 12 men, all of who are named in Numbers 13, but only two of who anybody remembers! The two that people remember are Joshua and Caleb, who later on went in to the Promised Land and did great things for God, but it hinged on this incident in our text. God, through Moses instruction, sent 12 men in to spy out the land that he said he was going to give his people. They went and came back, all agreeing that it was a plentiful land, but 10 of them complained and refused to believe that the Lord could bring them safely in to that land…only Joshua and Caleb believed God!

If you want to be remembered as someone who did something of importance…put your faith in God and believe what he says! Nobody remembers the 10, because unbelief strips us of a lasting legacy. Let’s not let that happen to any one of us!!!
