“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests by made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:4-7
These verses are some of my favorites. I think of how timeless God’s Word is; it is as applicable today, as it was hundreds of years ago. So why are fear, anxiety and worry epidemic right now?
“God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” 2 Timothy 1:7 Fear (which for the purpose of my writing will also include worry and anxiety) binds us and we can become paralyzed by our fears to the point of not really living our lives, or at least not victoriously and joyfully. So how do we fight against Satan’s attacks? I believe it’s through prayer and reading the Word and claiming it in our own lives.
“Do not fear, only believe.” Mark 5:36c If we truly trust in the Lord with all our heart, we won’t be fearful, because we will be confident in His love and care for us. “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.” 1 John 4:18
If we have unconfessed sin in our lives, we may be right to be fearful....or if we are choosing to stay in rebellion against God. That opens up another whole aspect of why we are fearful, but it definitely warrants our attention if we are filled with fear, anxiety or worry.
“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? Psalm 27:1
“In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.” Psalm 4:8 I used to have insomnia, and now in hindsight, I know why. It was because as I was winding down from the busyness of the day, I would become anxious and fearful of all the what-ifs. I claimed this verse over and over, and thankfully I haven’t suffered from insomnia recently. I also meditate on the name of Jesus as I lay down.
“Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.”1 Peter 5:7 Freedom from fear involves retraining our mind to turn to Jesus in prayer, and rejecting thoughts and lies from Satan or our sinful nature. Recognize our flesh.
“I sought the Lord, and He answered me and delivered me from ALL my fears.” Psalm 34:4 God replaces fear with His peace. His peace guards and protects our hearts and minds. Who doesn’t want this? As believers, we can overcome and have complete victory in our lives. He can deliver us from ALL of our fears, as it says in the Word.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me. Thank You for Your Word and the Truth. Please reveal to me the Truth in my own life about anything that I need to deal with that is keeping me from Your perfect peace and assurance. I surrender all that I am to You. Also, if this is an issue you are dealing with, i would suggest listening to the song: No Longer Slaves to Fear by I Am They
