Remember growing up and memorizing the Ten Commandments? Many of us may still have them memorized today or at least come up with most of them and maybe even in the right order. How valuable is it for us to understand these commandments? In almost every study I lead, I take time to go over the Ten Commandments – I think understanding the meaning or in some part the meaning of the commandments is so important for us because as believers it is part of our foundation, it is why Christ came and died and resurrected. If our goal is to be Christ like, then a short study on the Ten Commandments is essential. Here are a few thoughts:
The Ten Commandments are summed up in one word – LOVE! Love God and Love others. The Ten Commandments are like a mirror revealing to us how dirty we are (revealing our sins). The Ten Commandments (God’s Law) shows each of us that we are law breakers (criminals) against a Holy God and therefore sends us to Jesus Christ, our soap for cleaning. Sin = I’m going to do what I want, when I want, how I want and I don’t care what anybody else has to say about it (my version of Isaiah 53:6). The good news is the blood of Jesus makes us white as snow.
God spoke all these words of the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:1) and the two tablets of stone were written with the finger of God (Exodus 31:18). Sin is obviously a big deal to God as it was the reason why God’s Son went to the cross for us. Over the next few weeks, I will write a few things about each commandment – here’s the first one.
First Commandment: “You shall have no other gods before me.” This commandment concerns our worship. Everyone is a worshipper of something – we were created to be worshippers of God. What do you worship? What do you put ahead of God? – Financial success, power, influence, position, sports, hobbies, family, sexual lusts, drugs, alcohol, pleasures of the world, our bodies, self, the occult…? NOTHING IN OUR LIFE SHOULD BE EQUAL TO GOD OR AHEAD OF GOD! Take time in prayer this week and seek the Lord and have Him show you if there is anything in your life that you are putting ahead of God. God will reveal those things to you, because He desires holiness from you and does not want our sinful nature to get in the way of all that he has for you.
Deuteronomy 8:19 And if you forget the Lord you God and go after other gods and serve and worship them, I solemnly warn you today that you shall surely perish.
Exodus 34:14 (for you shall worship no other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God)
Luke 4:8 And Jesus answered him, “It is written, “’You shall worship the Lord you God, and Him only you shall serve.’”
John 4:23 - 24 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship Him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”
