Serving Others

“A brother or sister in Christ might need clothes or food. If you say to that person, ‘God be with you! I hope you stay warm and get plenty to eat,’ but you do not give what that person needs, your words are worth nothing.” James 2:15-16

Faith with works, such a controversial topic in today’s faith. Christianity went from a “changed life” to an “add Jesus and continue to live the same life.” If you ask me, a faith without works is not a saving faith. What does that mean, JJ? Are you saying that to be saved one must do works? No. I’m saying that if we are truly born again and washed by the blood, then the love of Christ would be so prevalent in our lives, that we wouldn’t not be doing good works.

One day I was driving home from Wal-Mart and drove by a man who was holding a sign that read, “need food and gas, anything will help.” My initial thought wasn’t Christ-like. Honestly, how many of us have had times in our lives where we have looked at someone in a lesser class then us and judged them? We subtly think to ourselves, “that person doesn’t really need my help.” I drove by that man with the sign not thinking like Christ would have. I came back to that man showing the love of Christ.

Our job isn’t to go around day to day not showing God’s love. Our job is to go around and help those in need. Many people will say, “you have to be careful with that.” I’ve realized, at my young age, when Christ has come upon your heart serving others is not an option, it is a demand.

Matthew 28:19 says, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” To make disciples, we will have the opportunity to serve Jesus and the person we are making a disciple. That is our job here on Earth, to make disciples and to serve others; and in return God is glorified.

How can you help a brother or sister in Christ today? How can you show the love of Christ to someone who may not know Him? Let us not be the Christian that drives by the man or woman holding a sign, asking for help and think to ourselves, “God be with you” without stopping.
