The Full Armor of God

March 14, 2017

Last week, I wrote about God calling me to be a warrior and suggested reading about the full armor of God in Ephesians 6:10-18.

We need to recognize that life on earth is a battle. We are in battle against our own rebellion against God, the temptations of the world, and the Devil. If we know that we are in a battle, we need to be ready for it.

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might.” Ephesians 6:10

When I think of a warrior, I think of strength, passion about the cause, fearlessness, diligence, perseverance, following direction from your superior, discernment about what to speak and what to keep silent about, standing firm, being awake and alert, and loyalty. I also think about weapons. When our fight is a spiritual fight, we need to know what the Bible says about it. Isn’t it awesome that the Word tells us specifically what weapons He has provided for us?

“Fasten the belt of truth” Ephesians 6:14b God’s truth will give us the the commitment to integrity that we need to win spiritual battle. “Put on the breastplate of righteousness” Ephesians 6:14c We are fighting for holiness, so this right relationship with God is essential in an effective fight. “As shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace” Ephesians 6:15 Being willing to boldly identify with Christ and share the gospel. “Take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one.” Ephesians 6:16 Bold faith that wards off attacks.

“Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. Ephesians 6:17

No fear, trusting in God and His protection, and the renewing of our minds. The Word is an offensive weapon against attacks. We see that Jesus used the Word against evil when the Devil tempted Him in Matthew 4:1-11.

“Praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints,” Ephesians 6:18

Prayer in the Spirit aligns us with God and makes us partners with Him in this battle. If we fail to pray, we will surely fail. Without the full armor of God, we are defenseless against evil, but with the provision of these weapons, we can be victorious.

Are you feeling ready to stand firm and face the battle?
