True Rest and Refreshment

February 28, 2017

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Matthew 11:28, 29

Are you weary? In need of refreshment, hope, joy, victory in your life? This verse has a step by step formula for finding true rest.

“Come to me..” Just turning our eyes and focus to Jesus is the beginning. Taking our eyes off ourselves and our problems and looking to Him. He already knows every detail of our lives. Just being in His presence has power. If we aren’t spending time in His presence, nothing in our lives will be sustainable. God desires relationship with us, and to have that relationship status, we have to spend time alone and away from distractions with Him. To practice His presence, we need to be quiet, not asking for anything, other than Him. Focusing on Him and Him alone. This time in His presence does more than we would think humanly possible. As we spend time in His presence, He meets with us and strengthens us, even if we aren’t fully aware that it is happening. He fills us up with everything we need as we focus on Him.

“Take my yoke upon you.” A common figurative expression at that time of submission or instruction. So if we are submitted to Him and His ways, it says we will find rest for our souls. Have you ever been so dead-dog tired, but couldn’t sleep or find rest? This verse holds the answer to how to find true rest, something that is often missing in the world. We can think that if things would just slow down, or if we could just get some sleep, we would feel rested. But we can never be truly rested AND refreshed without taking everything we are to Jesus and submitting all to Him.

“He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.” Isaiah 40:2

The Lord replied, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” Exodus 33:14

He prepares us in ways that we often don’t even know that we need to be prepared as we spend time in His presence. He is not only giving us rest, but He is building us up to warrior status. It all begins in His presence. Practicing spiritual disciplines, including time in His presence, prayer, worship, repentance, fasting.....I will be continuing on the topic of becoming a warrior for the Lord each Tuesday for the next couple of weeks, as the Lord leads.
