Exodus 2:24 “And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.”
I remember a time in my life when I felt as if I was in bondage. No matter how hard I tried to escape, I just couldn't free myself. It was a pivotal time in my life; I had to choose whether to stay on the road of destruction or cry out to God to help free me.
Israel was in a different type of slavery than I was. Obviously we are all born into slavery of sin, it’s just our humanly desire to sin. Israel was enslaved to Egypt. Pharaoh wanted to, ‘deal shrewdly with them’. Pharaoh did anything and everything he could to make their lives bitter by doing strenuous and hard work.
Fast forward to Exodus 2 where we get introduced to Moses. Moses had fled to Midian because he struck down an Egyptian and hid him in the sand (Exodus 2:12). As we continue to read through Exodus 2 we quickly come upon verse 24, “God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.” The previous verse lets us know that the people of Israel groaned because of their slavery. But here’s what stands out to me in these particular verses. It wasn't because of the Israelites groaning that God heard them; God heard them because they cried out for help.
Our God is a God who hears His children! There will be times in our lives where we will feel that we are in bondage, where we will feel like we are enslaved to the darkness, but God will bring us out of that bondage when we cry out to Him! It may not be today, it may not be tomorrow, it may not be next week, next month or this year; but God WILL free us!
Know that God hears our prayers, He hears our groaning, He hears our cries but He also SEES our despair.
What is it that you feel enslaved to lately? Spend time with God and cry out for Him to move and set you free from whatever it is that may be enslaving you.
